A donor profile demonstrates how a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust can be used to benefit several charities.

Brother Russell Pancake, 32°, K.C.C.H., and his wife, Pearl
Several times a year we feature a donor profile of an individual or couple in order to recognize their gift in a personal way. This month's article features Russell and Pearl Pancake of Woodstock, Virginia. It was a sad day when we received a phone call from Pearl to inform us that Brother Russell, 32°, K.C.C.H., passed away on November 17, 2000. We kept in touch with Pearl and expressed our desire to share some information about the Pancakes in the Scottish Rite Journal to recognize them for their wonderful gift, though Pearl reminded us of Russell's quiet personality and low-key nature. Russell and Pearl's generosity was not given for the sake of public recognition; it was truly a gift from the heart.

They established the W. Russell Pancake and Pearl S. Pancake Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust because, in this one financial instrument, they were able to recognize the Scottish Rite Foundation, Southern Jurisdiction, and two other charities as remainder beneficiaries. Brother Russell and Pearl took the time and effort to establish a trust that would accomplish their philanthropic goals. How did they do it?

Given the Pancake's desire to make a charitable gift to the Scottish Rite Foundation, Bro. Russell called our Sovereign Grand Commander, Ill. C. Fred Kleinknecht, 33°, to discuss a contribution to the Pooled Income Fund. Brother Russell had discovered information in the Scottish Rite Journal about the Scottish Rite Foundation Pooled Income Fund. Russell and Pearl expressed their desire to recognize three different charities. Since the Scottish Rite Foundation Pooled Income cannot recognize charities not affiliated with the Scottish Rite, we offered to help Russell and Pearl find the best way to make their gift do exactly what they wanted. Brother Russell also decided to develop a Comprehensive Estate and Financial Review through our Development Office. After receiving the Comprehensive Estate and Financial Review, Russell and Pearl decided to establish a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust. Their attorney provided the proper documentation, and they were able to make their gift to the charities they wanted to support. Throughout the entire process, Bro. Russell and Pearl made it very clear that their first priority in setting up any type of trust was to make a charitable contribution to their selected charities.

Russell and Pearl were married for 62 years. They met at a church service in Elmhurst, Illinois. Russell spent his career as an outside plant engineer for the Bell System and GTE for over 46 years and traveled throughout the world coordinating telephone systems for United States military installations while working for GTE. Pearl spent her career in accounting working for a large food supplier.

Brother Russell was a true Mason. Remaining a member of Oakland Lodge No. 192, Oakland, Maryland, where he was raised in 1942, he regularly attended the local Blue Lodge wherever he lived. A Scottish Rite Mason for over 56 years in the Valleys of Cumberland, Maryland, and Austin, Texas, he was an active member of the Scottish Rite Club in Shenandoah, Virginia. Pearl is a member of the Eastern Star, Spurmont Chapter No. 64, in Strasburg, Virginia. Brother Russell also belonged to the same Chapter. Pearl's favorite activities include music and knitting.

The Pancakes loved to travel, and they took trips all over the world. Their favorite destinations were England, Austria, Germany, and in the United States they particularly enjoyed Alaska and Hawaii. Russell's hobbies included furniture making and refinishing. He was especially talented in fretwork on scroll saws. Russell loved to read, and over the years he established a great collection of books on Native Americans. Bro. Russell was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Pearl was born in Chicago, Illinois. They lived in Texas, Illinois, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Bro. Russell will truly be missed, but his and Pearl's generosity will live on through the W. Russell Pancake and Pearl S. Pancake Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust.
