Some Brethren, having reached the
Sublime Degree of Master Mason, believe that any additional Degrees
are superfluous and will add nothing of value to their Masonic
education. Nothing could be further from the truth. The three
symbolic Degrees of Freemasonry are an introduction to the world
of Freemasonry. As in a work of music, the introductory themes
must be developed in order to create a perfect composition. Thus,
the Master Mason's Degree presents a theme, the Hiramic Legend,
that is developed only in later Degrees of the Scottish Rite,
integrated into the Lodge of Perfection. Furthermore, the additional
Degrees of the Scottish Rite, from the 18th to the 32nd, include
a wealth of philosophical and symbolic knowledge employing the
symbolism of the Rosicrucian, Alchemical, and Cabbalistic traditions.
Whoever wants to deepen his understanding of Freemasonry should
join the Scottish Rite and symbolically climb the ladder of enlightenment
represented by its Degree system. The 18th Degree, for example,
is highly significant. It invites the Knights of the Rose Croix
to reflect on the eternal questions of life and death, of earthly
tribulations, and eternal justice. The 31st Degree, on the other
hand, presents a wide panorama of philosophical teachings of the
sages from all times and cultures. The Scottish Rite's profound
philosophical teachings, constitute a valuable element in the
education of every Freemason.
