About the Supreme Council
The “Supreme Council” is the governing body of the “Scottish
Rite,” which is the largest branch of Masonry or Freemasonry (the oldest
and largest fraternity in the world). Originally, Freemasonry had three basic
levels, or degrees of membership. In time, other Masonic organizations were created
and built upon the basic three levels of the Grand Lodge. The Supreme Council
of the Scottish Rite, which was organized on May 31, 1801 in Charleston, South
Carolina, has thirty degrees in addition to the three degrees of the basic lodge.
In 1915 the “House of the Temple,” designed by the famed neoclassical
architect John Russell Pope, was completed and became the headquarters
of the Supreme Council.
While the House of the Temple serves as the administrative and ceremonial residence
of the governing body for the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry,
it also serves as a Museum boasting impressive galleries of Masonic memorabilia
and related artifacts. The collections include a variety of curiosa, works of
art, antiquities, antiques, flags, jewelry, ceremonial regalia, timepieces, statuary,
and much more.
The Library of the Supreme Council was the first library in the District of
Columbia open to the public. Boasting more than 250,000 reference works, periodicals
and
monographs, it serves as a reference library for students, scholars, and
others interested in researching fraternal topics.
The Scottish Rite participates in philanthropic endeavors, including a specialized
hospital for children, scholarships, and an extensive system of clinics
offering assistance to children with language disorders. North American
Masonic philanthropies
donate more than $2 million per day to charitable causes, of which about
70% goes to the general public.
