He joined DeMolay, E-Dah-Ho Chapter, in Moscow, Idaho, in November of 1971 and has been involved ever since. On the International level, he has served as Chairman of the Budget & Finance and Convention Planning Committees, Chaired the Executive Officer’s Conference, and served on the Investments Committee for the organization. He served twice as Executive Officer of Idaho and was honored in 1994 with the DeMolay Eagle Award 1994 for Most Improved Jurisdiction, in 2001 for Executive Officer of the Year, and in 2003 for Member of the Year.

He has received a number of awards with Farmers Insurance Group and continues to be involved in a number of community-based organizations. He is a former Mayor of Wallace, Idaho, and served as National President of the University of Idaho Vandal Boosters in 1994.

Grand Master Kimberling says, “My participation in DeMolay has opened many positive doors for me in my lifetime. My current involvement with DeMolay gives me the same opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our future leaders.”

Electrical Renovation,
Valley of Kansas City, Missouri

Ill. Chilton C. Christopher, 33°, works to install a state-of-the-art electrical dimmer system, recently donated by Bro. Milo Barnhard Jr., KCCH, to the Valley of Kansas City, Missouri.

At the age of 83, most Brothers are not eager to take on new projects, but Bro. Milo Barnhard Jr., KCCH (photo below), decided to donate a major improvement to his Valley, Kansas City, Missouri. The Scottish Rite Temple’s auditorium and stage electrical dimmer system were seriously outdated. Bro. Barnhard donated $2,000 seed money for the system’s renovation; his wife, in her will, donated $10,000; Bro. Barnhard’s business associates contributed financial support; and the Kansas City Scottish Rite Valley Foundation also made a very generous donation. These funds, plus Bro. Barnhard’s donation of all labor costs, has resulted in a state-of-the-art system that will serve the Brethren of the Valley of Kansas City, Missouri, for decades to come. Thank you, Bro. Barnhard!

Americanism Essays Open Eyes and Hearts

For the 17th year, the Valley of Wheeling, West Virginia, observed Veterans Day by a public ceremony where, as part of the patriotic festivities, they conferred three cash awards ($200 to $300) to the winning essays of students from five neighboring counties. As a result, a full-page description of the contest and the texts of the winning essays garnered great positive public awareness of the Scottish Rite in the Wheeling News-Register. First-place winner Julie Holeczy (pictured above with Ill. Bros. Frank B. Gardner, Contest Chairman, and Harold M. Hays, Jr., Personal Representative in Wheeling) expressed the thoughts of all the competition’s contestants in her essay’s final paragraph: “Veterans Day this year opened my eyes, as well as my heart, to the true meaning of the day and the people who give it meaning. Never again will I take for granted the people who risk their lives for me every day. They are the people who hold our country together and make me proud to be an American.”

“Did You Wear Your Ring Today?”

The above was a great article by W. Brad Bembry, KCCH, in the spring 2004 Missouri Freemason (republished in the May-June 2004 Scottish Rite Journal). My family, too, has a Masonic ring story to tell. Our son, Cpl. Joshua Smith is a fourth generation member of Meridian Lodge #2, St. Louis, Missouri along with his younger brother, Joseph (away at college) and brother-in-law Chris Snethen. Joshua is a U.S. Marine currently stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise headed overseas. When Josh left the states, he packed up all of his “valuables" except for his Masonic ring, which he wore. His grandpa, Ervin J. Geimer, made it for him from stainless steel. His “good” Masonic ring from his Dad (Kevin) was put away for safety. Josh is always telling us about “another Mason he met on the ship.” He’ll never know how good it makes this mother feel that he is with “Masonic family” while away from his family in the states. Please remind everyone to say a prayer for the Masonic Brothers overseas!

MIC Offers New "Cornerstones" Brochure

The Masonic Information Center (MIC) recently published a new brochure titled “Cornerstones, A Masonic Tradition of Dedication That Makes Sense Today.” Aside from giving a brief history of the Masonic cornerstone-laying ceremony, the colorful 15-page publication details how to organize such an event in your community and the public relations benefits it can bring to Freemasonry. Based on a text originally written by Ill. Jim Tresner, GC, for the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma, the brochure was reworked by the members of the MIC Steering Committee, headed by Ill. Richard E. Fletcher, to create a generic guide applicable to a variety of civic dedication and re-dedication ceremonies. Copies are available @ $0.50 each (PPD) with a 40% discount in lots of 50 or more copies, plus shipping/handling.
